Reclaimed Luxury Dress - Lifestyle Spec
A luxury beachside lifestyle commercial made from a $25 thrift store find.
The Challenge
This commercial was created as a part of a challenge video for my socials wherein I make high-end commercials from random thrift store finds.
Facing a zero-budget constraint, I had to find a way to transform the dress into a luxury piece by crafting a world that viewers would find desirable and aspire to join.
So What Did I Do?
I wanted to show each of the dress’s features in a natural, desirable way - so I built the commercial around the characteristics: a backless, pink floral dress with a crossover boddice, made mostly of chiffon fabric.
But what does this actually mean?
With the dress having a floral pattern, this meant that a nature setting would feel most natural. This played well with the chiffon fabric, as it is a very light, sheer fabric that moves in a silky fashion in the wind.
I chose to shoot at a beach at sundown as I thought it would look most striking, with the soft vibrant lighting of the sky and the reflections of the water playing off the dress’s pink fabric.
I mixed in lots of closeups and wide shots to show off the full dress as well as the small features such as the frilly shoulder cuffs moving gently in the wind.
I chose to use light jazz music, which fit the relaxing vibe of the commercial. It also felt more luxurious and expensive, which set the tone for the product itself.
For final touches, I colored it to look filmic, with grain and compressed colors giving it an almost nostalgic, warm feeling.
